Why Clients Aren't Following You on Your Socials

Are you finding that only photographers are following you on social media?  Your numbers look good but you aren't getting hired to do what you love?

What can you do to fix that?

See when social media started there was a big push to gain followers.  This was done with following groups, follow-for-follow strategies, and other ways to build up the numbers.  The problem was that those actions encouraged a lot of photographers to follow each other but it did nothing to gain followers that would actually hire you.

So when you are followed by photographers and you do awesome work, the kind of comments you get are:

  • "What were your settings"
  • "What color backdrop is that?"
  • "What kind of lights do you use?"
  • etc. . .

Those are great questions but they won't get you booked.

You need interaction from prospective clients, NOT other photographers.  So why aren't prospective clients interacting with you on social?

You haven't given them a reason to.  It is as simple as that.  People need a reason to follow you and interact with you. They need to believe that the content you put out is going to be of value to them in any way in the future.

If all you are showing is:

  • Pretty pictures
  • Only sales pitches
  • Limited descriptions with no helpful info

That is of little value to someone who wants to hire you.

Instead of only posting those things, add in some helpful information that removes the roadblocks they have in hiring you.

So do some brainstorming and come up with topics that prospective clients need to know about.  Things like:

  • Why hiring a make-up and hair artist is a great idea
  • Where to find wardrobe stylists for free (hint, most major high-end department stores have them)
  • When is the best time to schedule a session
  • and on and on

Then create a cover picture, write a mini blog in the caption with three key points, and post one of these things once a week.

To get ideas for future topics, ask for ideas in your stories.

By helping your prospective clients overcome the challenges in hiring you, they will start to see the value in what you post on your socials.

OH and PRO TIP:

Use your mini blog caption as an outline for a full blog post on your website

Create a carousel post with an opening slide, three points, and how to book on the last slide

Incorporate the content into a reel.

With one idea that has three points, you have just created four pieces of content that can be used for your business.

Winner!  Winner!
